    Abstract:

    This research evaluated the effects of vermicompost as peat substitute in growing media( 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) on the physical and chemical properties of the substrate and the growth of two flowers of green radish and Chlorophytum.The results showed that the replacement of peat by vermicompost significantly increased the bulk density, pH, available potassium, and available phosphorus of the matrix, while the total porosity and organic carbon decreased significantly.The total porosity( 64.2% ~ 69.6%), water-holding porosity( 41.0% ~ 48.4%), aeration porosity (18.8% ~ 24.5%) and EC( 334.8 ~ 352.9 μ S/cm) of the matrix after vermicompost replacing peat were all within the recommended range, but the bulk density( 0.46~0.61 g/cm3) and pH( 7.4~7.8) of the matrix were beyond the recommended range.The replacement of peat by vermicompost had no significant effect on the fresh weight increment, stem and leaf fresh weight increment, root fresh weight increment, root dry weight and root length of green radish( P>0.05).However, vermicompost replacing peat significantly increased the stem and leaf dry weight of green radish at VC50%( P<0.05). In the case of low replacement ratio( VC25% and VC50%), it was more beneficial to the growth and development of green radish( plant fresh weight increment, stem and leaf fresh weight increment, stem and leaf dry weight).The replacement of peat by vermicompost had no significant effect on the height increment, expansion degree increment, leaf number increment, stem and leaf dry weight, root dry weight and root length of Chlorophytum( P>0.05).And there was no significant difference in the growth indexes of Chlorophytum among different replacement ratios of vermicompost( P>0.05).During the growth process, the changes in SPAD of the leaves of green radish generally remained the same, without obvious nitrogen deficiency, while the SPAD of the leaves of Chlorophytum decreased significantly at a later stage, and the phenomenon of“ defertilization” appeared.In short, the replacement of peat by vermicompost significantly increased the bulk density, pH, available potassium and available phosphorus of the substrate, and significantly reduced the total porosity and organic carbon of the substrate.The low replacement ratio( VC25% and VC50%) of vermicompost is more conducive to the growth of green radish, but the replacement of peat by vermicompost has no effect on the growth of Chlorophytum.
